EnD OF YEAR WORdS from wtmy directors

Sarah -

Six years ago when I left Nepal, I probably wouldn't have believed you if you told me that I would go on to give up my year off and instead, I would go back to Kathmandu to formally Found Welcome To My Yard... but I did! It's certainly been an exciting year,  full of hard work, challenges and so much learning. It was amazing to go back to Kathmandu and meet the young people again after so long, talk to them about the photos they took, tell them how we have used the money we raised and see the results of the street young men achieving their taxi licences and the children that we funded to go to school. But what's been even more exciting has been getting to know the young people better, meeting their children now also growing up on the street, seeing their amazing strengths and abilities to survive in really difficult circumstances, and then spending time planning on how we can further support them in the future through our social enterprise. I have been buried under a mountain of funding applications for the last few months that feels as big as Everest, but we have already been lucky enough to have organisations and individuals that have said, 'yeah, go for it!' and are supporting us with our dreams and ambitions. That has been such a huge motivator and we can't thank you enough for that. So, looking ahead to 2012, we have double the work to do of this year but I'm really excited to get back to Kathmandu and take our first step and keep climbing that funding mountain. We still have a loooong way to go! We are already planning ahead and will have some exciting announcements in the New Year for our supporters! Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. I hope we will do you proud next year!

Ray
- It’s been great spending these last few months back home in Australia, I been away for a long time again so it was an extra special Christmas being with my family and friends.  It also gave me time to reflect with my year and the project, looking back at each young person we met in Kathmandu, it gave me that extra motivation to work harder. The last few months had been super busy for WTMY members and friends. In the last few months we have officially registered as a UK Social Enterprise, had our first success with the November Challenge which we hope to run again next year, donations from the general public, friends and family, our friends from prAna, Evolv, Sterling Ropes and Good for Life have all helped us achieved baby steps to where we want to be for 2012.
We still have a long road ahead but it’s definitely an exciting journey to look forward to. In the beginning of February we will be returning to Nepal to dedicate our time completely to Welcome to My Yard and to the young people and street children.  I personally like to thank everyone that has been involved and supported Welcome to My Yard these last few months, it has been an amazing journey so far and we have YET TO BEGIN. Bring on 2012! VENGA!!We are in need of a new team member who can support us with a small amount of UK based Administration. As much of the Directors time is spent in Kathmandu we cannot deal with postal administration and some basic tasks. The work will involve accepting and forwarding funding letters, posting on reports, sending resources to volunteers doing fundraising activities and organising items for collection by volunteers who come out to Kathmandu periodically. Although the work will be very minimal, you will become a very important and appreciated part of the team!  This position is non paid but expenses will be reimbursed for postage or printing.

Thank you childreach intl.

We would like to say a big thank you to Childreach Nepal International for assisting on the monitoring and engagement of the young people. While the WTMY directors have left Nepal to pursue further funding from overseas, Childreach have kindly assisted hand picking two university students studying their last year of social work to assist on monitoring and engaging with the Pashupati street children.

meeting sundar and lavan

Ray & Sarah from WTMY met up with Pashupati's young people Sundarand Lavan, the two young people funded to train as taxi drivers. "I have been looking at those photographs for the last two years since I became part of the project and it felt like I already knew Sundar as he appears so much in the book. I was so excited" said Ray.  They also had the opportunity to meet Lavan for the first time. Lavan is married to one of the photographers in the book.

Both Lavan(26) and Sundar (25) are now married with two small children. They were just 11 and 9 years old when they first began living on the streets in Kathmandu. Now they want to focus on providing for their families.

The meeting took place in one of CWARDS' offices in Manangal nearby Pashupatiwith the help of the CWARD’s project officer, Kalpana. Both young men have just recently completed their taxi training and now are both waiting for calls to beable to hire their own taxis from a union. They continue to work by the cremation temples during the day, helping setup the cremation. At night Sundarhas begun transporting wood in a car to use for the cremations. He thought that roughly a thousand bodies are burnt at Pashupatinath every week.

“Sundar and Lavan wanted to know why anyone cared enough to give them this opportunity and they wanted to say how grateful they are for the support. It was really emotional to hear that” Sarah said.
It was agreed that Ray will meet up with the boys whilst he is in Kathmandu to help them improve their English. This will help them with foreign customers when they are running their business in places like Thamel
